In the United States of America, Department of Motor Vehicles (or DMV) is a commonly used name of the government agency of a U.S. state which administers the registration of automobiles (e.g., by issuing license plates), and/or the licensing of drivers (e.g., by issuing driver’s licenses). In some states, these two functions are performed by separate state agencies.
Why Do So Many People Hate to go to DMV? So many drivers consider going to DMV a hassle others complain DMV doesn’t do their job proberly. So what’s wrong with DMV, Department of Motor Vehicles?

1. Understanding DMV rules, forms and manuals are so hard that a lot of people turn to unofficial DMV guides. These unofficial DMV websites provides drivers with free and simple guide to state DMV and in return they make millions of dollars every year. Yes, thats a million dollar business. That type of things happen when one business is just so far behind the competition. I understand DMV is government run organization but they are int the business of serving people with resourceful and fast service.

2. DMV doesn’t look over used car being sold. Because of that flooded cars like those from hurricane Katrina has been sold as just used car doubled over the past few years. These cars are meant to be sold for scrap not for someone else to use it again. But state DMV fails to prevent these junk and flooded cars being sold in the market as a used car.

3. DMV car record keeping is a mess. To fight against stolen car sold in the open market, in 1992 the government launched Anti-Car Theft Act authorized the creation of a database, known as the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System, which allows state DMVs to verify a car’s title, theft and damage history before issuing a new title. But 15 years later car thieves continue to use chop shops and sell those stolen cars.

4. Drunk drivers get listed in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s National Driver Register, but records for those with one DUI are often confined to only one state. So those repeated drunk driving offenders get to hop to another state and drive with a clean driving record. Information are not archived properly.

7. Identity theft is the number one crime in the U.S., according to Werner Raes, president of the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators. The simplest form, mostly used by new criminals, is to ask the DMV for a duplicate license in some other person’s name. Identity thieves simply tell the DMV clerk that they’ve lost their license or that it was stolen, then provide someone else’s illegally obtained information. It’s a simple con to pull off.

8. Last but not least, people working there are often coming up with attitudes as if they are doing a huge favor to their customers. I would say the DMV employees should go through a mandatory customer service training similar to many other companies. The policies and procedure can also be looked over for any changes that need to apply.

Note: Some states do not separate DMV functions into distinct organizational entities at all, but simply bundle them into a laundry list of responsibilities assigned to an existing government agency. For example, in the state of Washington, the Department of Licensing is responsible for driver’s licenses, and vehicle and boat registrations in addition to most other business and occupational licensing. In Michigan and Illinois, the Secretary of State’s offices perform responsibilities which would be handled by the DMV in other states.

People hate going to DMV because it’s a big hassle everytime you go there. They got rules there that no other businesses have such as not being able to use Credit Cards to pay for fines and fees. Another thing is that even though Department of Motor Vehicles through out the states provide good resourceful information, none of them are organized. You just have to spend a lot of time digging for a simple piece of information such as renewal of tabs or insurance requirements.
