Sony announced the $100 price cut for 60GB PS3 recently. But now it seems from the interview Gamesindustry.biz did with David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe that the price cut will go away soon. “All they’re doing is taking their stock in trade that they’ve got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.” That’s a good tactics in a sense that people will start buying those 60GB PS3 but when they are gone, this would have already generated interest in new consumer to buy the new 80GB $599 ones if the $499 ones are not available.

Other sites like joystiq has been updating on this story as well. As for the latest, it seems like the story is true: that the $499 PlayStation may get sold out within few months and Sony isn’t planning on making this discounted PS3. Instead they are going to focus on PlayStation 3 which has 80GB and comes with the popular Motorstorm racing game. This 80GB PlayStation 3 is supposed to be coming out in the month of August.
