If you are like many household families who might be suffering from tight budgets and too many expenses, you should consider lowering your monthly bills. This is probably the most cost effective way of saving money because unlike other expenses, monthly bills such as cable bills take away money from your bank account repeatedly. There is no end to it. Even though you enjoy watching your favorite television shows and sports, you should know that there are many ways to keep your cable service while cutting down the cost you are paying for it.

Here is how – Ways to lower your cable bill:

Distinguish between what you really need and what you should get rid of : more often than not, we have extra channels that we don’t even watch. If you are a sports fan and don’t watch financial news such as CNBC may be try getting rid of it. Cable providers usually start the services at home with lots of channels for free in the beginning, like for 2 months, and then later they start charging you unless you call them to discontinue those channels that you don’t even watch. So maybe if you know you got lots of different channels from your service provider, call them to cancel the ones you don’t need. Else you can just keep flipping the channels right now and see if you notice any premium channels that is there for no reason.

Pay attention to your bills – take time to read what your cable bills say each month. Sometimes there could be discrepancies in balances, even if it wasn’t done intentionally. Another thing is to know if your cable bill has increased or not – between 1995 and 2008 the price for basic cable service went up by more than 120%.

Beware of those introductory prices: both cable and satellite companies keep on running commercials about their huge introductory price deals. These deals give the new customers a cable service a discounted promotional price. But the thing is, a lot of customers start disliking these deals – for the discount last only for few months and you can not cancel the service after the introductory prices have expired – because you signed up a multi-year contract. So if you do terminate the service, you have to pay an early termination fee; or else keep paying a high bill monthly. That’s why read all the terms, agreements, policies before you sign up for these so called discounted prices.

Be a good negotiator: if you are not happy with how much your cable is costing you, just give the customer service a call. At the end of the day, you will come out with a result- whether it be less channels for less price or same number of channels for the less price. Either way, you have been able to successfully shrink your cable bill. The 5 minutes you spend waiting on the phone to speak with a customer service and an extra 5 more minutes you used to actually negotiate with one will from now on save you few buck or more every single month. Now that’s the way to cut down the costs.

Often ignore, but very simple: just from my personal experience, don’t forget to pay your cable bill on time. Paying cable bill late can result in late charges, account reinstatement fees and many other fines charges that is easily avoidable. If you are the kind of person who either forget or too busy to write down checks for your cable bill, here is the best way to reduce the bills – pay online, and better yet make it automatic. Lots of companies like customers to pay online with automatic withdrawal. Even though there might not be any extra perks for this, it does help lower the cable bills of those who have been paying late fees every now and then.

Get your own DVR and cable boxes – lot of people don’t know that your monthly bill include a renting fee for cable boxes and DVR (if you have that service). Now instead of paying monthly renting fees for these devices, why not buy your own cable boxes and DVR if you are planning it use to for a while. In the long run, this should definitely save you a lot of money.

Know you have other options: You have three different choices to watch television – through cable, satellite and on the internet. Even though you might not like watching tv on you computer, please do note that they are available for you to watch for free. You can also compare the price and channel lineups between satellite and cables.

Most important tips – is to take your time to find solutions. After all you work hard to earn money and live a good life; those money can’t be spent on cable bills disregarding the fact that there are many ways to lower them very easily. Just take the first step!

Definitely pay your bills on time. This might not lower your monthly bill but it will prevent your monthly cable bill from going higher.

Question will your debt improve by hiavng one bill to pay instead of several??? You are better off calling the credit card companies to ask their help in reducing your interest rates and making a conscious effort to pay the debt you have rather than focusing on consolidation. Please don’t consider one of those debt settlement places. They ruin your credit so badly that you may as well go bankrupt and owe nothing. What’s the difference between 7 years and 10 years of horrible credit that affect your interest rates, housing options, insurance rating and mainly your reputation??? You should consider a plan to pay what you owe and do it wisely. As you pay bills, take the same amount and apply to the next bill, then to the next bill, etc. Having one bill won’t get you any further ahead than hiavng several you owe what you owe. Get to the library and check out Dave Ramsey’s books on how to make a sensible plan. Reduce current expenses and increase income any way you can to get out of debt. You didn’t get into debt overnight so there’s no overnight solution except common sense and a diligent attempt to do what’s right. You CAN do it but not by hiavng everything you want. Start a savings account for long term needs and shop by value instead of cost. Look at both simple and complex debts. Consider downsizing home, car, wardrobe needs, etc. There were no credit cards 30 years ago and yet people had more. You can live without cable, cell phone, dinners at McDonalds, etc. Don’t try to keep up with the Joneses they’re broke!!! Worry about needs before wants and you’ll be amazed that you don’t need a loan you need a plan.
