Sony has announced a 17 percent or 100-dollar price cut for the PlayStation 3 in North America, responding to the widening lead of Nintendo Co.’s Wii and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360.. The price cut of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) with a 60-gigabyte hard drive to 499 dollars will happen in North American. The price will go effective immediately. But even after the price cut, Sony PS 3 will remain the most expensive gaming console.

Sony has made this announcement just two days before the opening of the E3, or Electronic Entertainment Expo, conference in Santa Monica, California. Gaming console makers and game publishers announce their new products for the coming year in E3 conference.

PlayStation 3 maybe better and more technologically advanced than its rivals, but PS 3 sales have been drastically trailing other major gaming systems. Accoriding to NPD Group, a market research company, Americans had bought 5.6 million units of Xbox 360, 2.8 million of Wii and 1.4 million of PlayStation 3 as of May 2007.

In the meantime, Sony is also introducing a new version of the PS3 featuring an 80-gigabyte hard drive and a copy of PS3 Motorstorm game, an off-road racing game that has already sold a million copies. The new model will sell for $600 and 80 gigabyte storage is aimed at gamers who plans to download a lot of games and other content from Sony’s burgeoning online network.

Please Note: The new reduced price of PS3 will be same as the retail price for Sony’s new entry-level Blu-ray DVD player. Therefore, those who want to a Blu-ray machine should consider buying the PS3 instead, which already comes equipped with Blu-ray disk player.

It’s surprising to me that sony is selling so many less of their systems than its competitors.
